HR Games & Case Competition

The 2018 ILSHRM Student Conference – HR Games & Case Competition is an exciting and unique opportunity for students across the state to learn, connect with their peers, and participate in a competitive HR challenge.

The Student Conference has three main objectives:

  • To provide a forum where students can experience real world problems through case preparations and learn from diverse perspectives
  • To encourage relationships between students and faculty from schools around the state
  • To provide an opportunity for industry professionals to witness future HR leaders

This year, the conference will be held on April 6th and 7th, 2018 at National Louis University in downtown Chicago Illinois.

HR Games

On Friday night, teams of students will test their academic knowledge answering HR related questions in a fun, laid-back format.  Over multiple rounds in Jeopardy-style game format, students will answer questions on HR-related topics.

Case Competition

On Saturday, teams will compete to deliver the best solution to an HR-related business case.   The case competition provides the opportunity to develop capabilities in finding strategic solutions to a real-life business issue.

How does it work?

Students participating in the Case Competition must designate a team captain to register the team using the Student Conference and Case Competition option.  The team captain will receive the HR Case Scenario via email on Monday, March 19th and the team will have two weeks to submit their proposed solution in a PowerPoint presentation and return via email to by Friday, March 30, 2018.

  • Teams present their proposals during a 15-minute presentation on Saturday, April 7th to a panel of judges followed by a 10-minute Q&A from the judges. Winning teams will be announced at the end of the conference.
  • Each school may have a maximum of two teams compete in the Case Competition.

Students not participating in the Case Competition will register using the Student Conference option, and will engage with speakers on current topics and trends in HR.

Faculty/Chapter Advisors will register using the Faculty/Chapter Advisor option.

All Case Competition teams must register by March 16, 2018.  Conference registration will close on March 30, 2018.

Dress Code

Friday – Casual attire for the HR Games.  Feel free to show your school pride and wear university swag.

Saturday – Business casual for the Case Competition and other sessions of the conference.

Do not dress in college/university colors or wear clothing bearing any reference to your university. Please remove your name badges before entering the oral presentation room if you are competing or observing.

Dates & Events Information

February 21, 2018: Registration – registration is open.

March 16, 2018: Registration – deadline to register for the Case Competition.

March 19, 2018: Case Release – team captains will receive case via email.

March 30, 2018: Case Completion – team captains must return the case via email.

March 30, 2018: Registration – deadline to register for the conference.

April 6, 2018: Conference begins – HR Games and Speakers.

April 7, 2018:  Competition Day – teams present their strategies to the panel of judges.

The conference is free for students and SHRM Student Chapter Advisors.
